Photos of Michelle McManus for Ypeople

I photographed Michelle McManus and some lovely young girls in Eleganza Sposa to promote Ypeople‘s Ladies Lunch and Fashion Show, which takes place on Saturday 23rd June in Glasgow.

So Much To Say…

… and so little time and energy! Sorry for lack of updates, folks, but I’ve been a tad busy. I’ve got plenty of blogs brewing that have yet to make their way onto the screen but I thought I’d just give you a quick summary and point you in the direction of a few new photos.

Today was spent cuddling and photographing dogs. In fact, I met and photo’d more than 30 of ‘em at the Glasgow Vet School Rodeo. Amazing event and great fun, despite a biting wind. I even popped into the reptile tent and was talked into holding a snake. I survived but I think I prefer them through a very long lens. I’ll have all the doggy photos online soon but, for now, you can check out my pictures from last year’s Rodeo here, featuring dogs, a lamb, sheep, a calf, ferrets, birds of prey and duck herding.

Puffins! I’ve put a few of my new puffin photos online. Lots more to come. They are ADORABLE.

Talking of adorable, have you ever seen a baby meerkat? Well, please step this way and prepare to squeal. I photo’d a baby and three adult meerkats at St. Andrews Aquarium last week. Lots to tell about that so please watch this space.

And now for something completely different. Here are my X Factor Live Tour Photos featuring One Direction, Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson, Cher Lloyd, Paije Richardson, Katie Waissel, Aiden Grimshaw and the legendary Wagner.

On top of all of that, I’ve walked on fire (I raised over £400 for OneKind!), done a really successful headshot shoot, taken some pictures of a great Quarriers project, done my first wedding (as second shooter for the fabulous One Big Picture Photography), picked up some great tips at the Photovision Roadshow, and managed an ounce of a social life at Edinburgh’s Twestival. I’ll tell you more about some of them soon.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and lie down ;)

Twisted Firewalker

I’m going to walk on fire. It’s just a small step away from walking on water although that may be a literal step if it goes wrong on the day. It’s all happening on the 27th March, on the hallowed turf of Hampden Park, a short crawl from home and A&E. I have every eventuality covered.

The firewalk is to raise money for OneKind (formerly Advocates for Animals), a brilliant animal charity. Visit www.onekind.org to find out more about them and have a look at their clever film trailer hoax. It stars Angus MacInnes, who you may recognise from Star Wars. I recognised him as Sonny from River City but that says more about me than him.

OneKind’s video excited thousands of sci-fi fans across the world and went on to win a Movieviral award. Please do watch it.

I photographed OneKind’s first firewalk last year and was hugely impressed by the staff, the organisation, and the preparation for the firewalkers. I didn’t take much persuasion when the team asked me take part this year.

I’ll tell you all about it once I’ve recovered. In the meantime, feel free to donate a little bit of money to help the charity’s great work :)

Thank you!

Lee McConnell Photocall

I took a few pictures at a photocall for Maggie’s Centres today. Athlete Lee McConnell teamed up with staff and supporters to launch a recruitment drive for women to run the 10k, to raise money for Maggie’s. It was a typically grey, miserable day in Glasgow and the ladies were freezing but they were great sports. Great sports, geddit?! Ach, I make myself laugh ;)

More photos are on Flickr and Facebook.

People Being Good And Being Social

Be Good Be Social took place in Edinburgh last night (that’s the charity sector social media event I blogged about last week), attracting delegates from the likes of Oxfam Scotland, Childline, Young Scot, Quarriers, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation and MND Scotland.

One of the joys of social media is the instant feedback – at events like this you’re positively encouraged to post Twitter updates throughout (it’s a delicious feeling, like you’re getting away with passing notes in class) and it adds to the experience to see what people are saying. We used the hashtag #begoodbesocial on Twitter – a useful thing to seek out if you want to learn a bit more about the benefits and challenges charities are discovering in social media. As well as taking ‘proper’ photos, I tweeted a few from my phone to complement the commentary.

I was too busy to pay attention to all of the advice on offer but there was a great atmosphere and a lovely bunch of people – a big enough crowd to feel like a worthwhile meet, small enough for friendly collaboration. Massive congratulations to Ross McCulloch, who instigated, organised and put his own money into the event, and a round of applause to his team of volunteers. I’m not sure anyone’s going to let him catch his breath before he organises the next one ;)

You can see my photos on Flickr and on Facebook.

Be Good Be Social

I’m photographing a charity sector social media event next week in Edinburgh. This is my guest blog for their website:

“Social media is great at giving people a voice. It doesn’t matter who you are, there are amazing tools on the world wide web that let you share your views, promote your work, get on your soapbox, or just have a natter. The Media no longer talks at the public, the public is now a very real part of the conversation. I spent years running a TV show’s blog and message board, and learned how important it is to listen to and engage with your audience.

I’m passionate about Twitter, Facebook and the rest. I changed my life a few months ago – left a great career at the BBC to become a freelance writer and photographer. It’s exciting and terrifying in equal measure but one thing has helped my transition more than anything else: Twitter.

I’ve got commissions through it, I’ve met inspiring people who have helped point me in the right direction, and I’ve made great friends. And when I’m working in isolation there’s always a crowd to join… and procrastinate with ;). Twitter is, in many ways, my office.

As if this isn’t enough to whet my appetite for the Be Good Be Social event, I love being involved with charities. I’ve had the pleasure to work with OneKind and Dogs Trust recently. It feels life-affirming to have new opportunities like these, and it gives me focus. I know that sounds cheesy but it’s a far cry from the world of entertainment that I have inhabited for so long!

I’ll be photographing Be Good Be Social, sending out a few tweets on the night and eavesdropping on all the wisdom you have to share.

I look forward to being a part of it.”

So there you go. A guest blog! Woo! Never done that before. I hope it’ll be the first of many. Now excuse me while I go faff about on Twitter
