About me

I'm Julie Broadfoot, a freelance professional photographer based in Glasgow. Most of my shoots are in Scotland but I am available for work across the UK and worldwide. I rarely face a camera and feel a bit lost without mine in my hand.

My style of photography

I take natural, relaxed, authentic portraits that flatter. I don't believe in Photoshop fakery. I love the reactions my clients get when they update Facebook and LinkedIn with their new photos... and seeing my images on billboards across the city is pretty special too!

Then there's the work I do at events - candid storytelling in a documentary style, watching people and animals, capturing moments, anticipating action, whether it's at a conference, charity walk, family party, a wedding, or in a wildlife rescue.

Exactly the same approach applies when I'm shooting live music gigs or on film/TV sets - they're where I learned my craft.

Experienced professional photographer

In 2010, I decided it was time to move on from a long career at the BBC. I walked away from producing websites for River City and Radio 1 to become a full-time photographer.

Self-employment makes for an interesting (and challenging) life but I now work for individuals, small business owners, famous faces, charities, big commercial clients and animal organisations. This means I’m experienced in working in many different environments and I'm shooting all year round.

If you’re interested in geekery, I shoot with Nikon D780 bodies, a variety of Nikon pro lenses, and I could talk about camera bags all day.

Hiding behind the camera

I'm a proud Auntie, a runner, gym-goer, a reader, and I'm older than I look. Although I suspect I aged decades during lockdown.

I'm obsessed with animals and work with them as much as I can. I’m a volunteer wildlife courier and I foster homeless hamsters. I would have a houseful of creatures if my wee rescue cat, Roxy, allowed it.

My most commonly-used phrase is "please may I speak to your dog?".

Trust me, I’m a photographer

I'm discreet, trustworthy, friendly and approachable so you can trust me to fit in, whether I'm working at a high profile event, photographing your friends and family, directing your famous clients, or lurking with a long lens across the room.

I have full insurance for my camera kit, along with public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and a basic disclosure from Disclosure Scotland. Visit my LinkedIn profile for more background information.

I'll help you get over your nerves

I'll get natural, happy photos even if you think "there's no way you'll get a good photo of me!". Most people feel like that but I'm great at making people comfortable in front of my camera. It’s my superpower. I honestly wish I could photograph myself the way I photograph other people... but my own dislike of being photographed feeds the empathy that helps you.

Natural light and symmetry

When it comes to visuals, I'm a sucker for symmetry and clean lines, natural light and white walls, fairy lights, details, patterns and reflections. But I also love cloudy skies, old brick walls, bokeh, negative space, abstracts and oddities... whether I'm at a shoot or grabbing iPhone pics on the move.

Find out more on social media

Follow me on FacebookTwitter and Instagram to discover a mix of life, work, family, random behind-the-scenes stuff and plenty of cute creatures. The daft stuff is usually limited to my Instagram Stories. Occasionally I remember to post 'proper' photos to promote my own business.

I found my calling in life when I photographed Joffrey’s birthday party and he rewarded me with cuddles. Please don’t tell Roxy. This picture was taken by his Mum, Briony Cullin.
